Course Summary


The Britchops Foundation Drum Course material has been carefully compiled to provide you with all the necessary information to begin playing today’s contemporary drum styles such as Rock; Pop/Top 40 and Indie/Britpop in a clear, easy to understand format. The 120 page course contains the following material:


In Section I we look at all the technical issues you need to consider before beginning to play anything on the kit.

Topics covered include:  

Introduction to the Modern Drum Kit; Setting up your Kit Correctly; Basic Drum Tuning; Choosing the Correct Drumsticks; Drumstick Anatomy; Holding your Drumsticks Correctly: The Matched Grip; Basic Hand and Foot Stroke Technique; Striking the Kit Instruments Correctly (Drums & Cymbals); Functions of the Different Kit Instruments; Role of the Drummer.

Section II contains comprehensive practical material on beginning to understand and read drum score, create and arrange basic drum parts, add greater musical expression to your playing and develop your own unique sound and feel on the Kit.

Topics covered include:  

Using the MIDI file Library; Introduction to Drum Score Notation; Straight Subdivision Studies: 1/4 and 1/8th Notes; Basic Groove Creation; Basic Fill Creation; Kit Motion Studies; Adding greater musical expression into your playing, inc: Flam Studies; Cross-Stick grooves; Dynamic and Tempo Markings; Further sub-division Studies: The Sixteenth (1/16th) Note; 1/16th Note Groove and Fill Techniques.

This Section also includes three examples of drum
Chart Reading specially chosen to demonstrate the main course material in real musical situations. So, if you're not a fan (or not even heard of them!) you will still get the full benefit of the course. The two tracks have been selected from two of the top debut britpop/indie albums of the ‘90’s. They are Oasis, ‘Supersonic’ from the album Definitely Maybe (Creation) and Cast, ‘Fine Time’ from the album All Change (Polydor).

Appendix section. This contains further developmental material in addition to the main course including templates and exercises designed to allow you to practice the main course material, develop your own drum parts and improve your rhythmic understanding.

Suggested Practice Routine; Table of Notes and Rests; Snare Line Reading Pages; Four Bar Hi-Hat Groove and Fill Sequence Templates; Four Bar Ride Cymbal Groove and Fill Sequence Templates.
